"You are lucky", I tell the flute

That lies near a tree's root

In that land of love, Vrindavan

Where that Shyam played it once

"It breaks my heart, oh Venu,

That all I desire is that caress

Of Shyam's long fingers,

Oozing with everlasting love.

Hey Bansuri, tell me something,

How does it feel, that feather touch

Of those fingers of Shyam

And that lovely brush of His lips?"

"He grasped my heart that day in Mithila,

When He grasped and pulled the thread,

Of Shiva's bow, and broke my heart too,

When He broke that very bow, long ago."

"Tell me, my dear Kuzhal, how come,

You stayed put without melting,

To a wooden pulp, every time that Shyam,

Held you and blew air to create a symphony?"

" Oh Blessed flute of divinity, whatever

Did you do to attain that pinnacle

Of all honours ever known in this cosmos.

Whatever did you do, I pray you tell?"

"Sometimes I believe you and I

Are much alike with a Yuga in between

He played you to music, with fingers,

He plays me too, but with thoughts."

"You are marked, oh Venu, with holes,

Seven of the seven notes to tune.

I am marked  with seven holes of

Anger, greed , delusion, lust, jealousy,

Fright, arrogant pride, my flaws forever."

"You were forever with Him,

I wish to forever be.

You were simply a piece of wood,

If not for Him.

He brought you to life.

Same applies, here, my dear.

He is my life, my very heartbeat,

He gave me life, and took my heart.

A payment of sorts, I suppose."

"Yet, He is my everything.

From every smile to every tear,

He is hidden in the depths of my soul.

And between every word I utter."

"In a way, we are so alike, my lute,

Because we are nothing without Him."

"But in a way, you are luckier.

You were with him throughout.

You have felt the caress of his hands,

And the soft brush of his lips.

Whereas I'll forever yearn for all those,

Little things of love in life, Him."

"They' ll always be my castles in air.

Waiting and waiting for Him.

Always hoping. Always believing.

Living on Earth, but thinking of moon.

Thinking of all those stars,

Waiting for my waiting to be over."

"Someday, my dear divine Bansuri,

When that Shyam takes you to play,

Tell Him that I have forever loved Him.

And that I remember certain times.

Tell Him I'll be waiting in love.

Always. And waiting for Him to come.

And if you do tell him, I'll forever

Owe you infinitely, and eternally."
